The Power of Acai

Acai has been known to be the secret super berry of the Amazon. Here’s why:

  1. Better sex
  2. Healthier Heart
  3. Clears skin
  4. Helps digestion
  5. Boots immunity

Better Sex

Acai has been known to increase energy, stamina and blood circulation. You can guess where this is leading, but what a great cocktail for a fun night out.

Good for the heart

As mentioned above, acai berries have been known to stimulate blood circulation, prevent blood clots and relax blood vessels similar to that of red wine. This is because acai is high in anthocyanins which lower cholesterol and contain plant sterols which stimulate the cardiovascular system.

Healthier Skin

Taken internally, the berries provide the skin with a natural glow, but if applied externally, acai’s antioxidant properties have contributed to healing skin conditions such as acne and discoloration. No wonder why so many skin care products contain acai oil!

Aids Digestion

Acai has high levels of natural fiber and it relieves both constipation and diarrhea by making bowel movements more regular and adding more bulk to the stool.

Immune Booster and Cancer Preventer

Acai has been known to boost the immune system by protecting the cellular system against the invasion of free radicals. A study also found that acai contains polyphenolic compounds which slow the growth of cancer by 50-80% and stop the process of carcinogenesis on a molecular level.

**Only buy organic acai. The benefits will be greater as it will contain higher levels of antioxidants and fewer chemicals.**

Controlling Cravings 101

With a plethora of the most savory and sweetest dishes being made for the holidays, it may be difficult to control food cravings. Read below to find out (1) why we have cravings and (2) how to control them.

Studies on pregnant women have found that the more often women experienced food cravings, the more likely they were to gain weight. This makes sense, right? If a woman has a lot of cravings, she is bound to give into some of them and gain weight. Cravings occur when our hormones are imbalanced so this not only applies to pregnant women, but women who are on their period or under stress. Because stress and menstruation occur for a short period of time, the weight gained isn’t that noticeable. But pregnancy is a different story. When you’re pregnant with nine solid months of fluctuating hormones the weight gain can be dramatic.

No matter if you’re stressed, on your period or pregnant–you have the power to control your food cravings through these 3 steps.

  • Take your emotional temperature
  • Find healthy replacements
  • Ride it out

Take Your Emotional Temperature.

Are you feeling stressed? When we are stressed our body releases a hormone called cortisol which causes us to seek “rewards”, often times in the form of comfort foods such as candy and fast food. But by doing this, we are creating a powerful connection in our minds between feelings and food, leading to more frequent cravings that are impossible to control.

Find Healthy Replacements.

Pay attention to the kinds of foods you’re craving and categorize them by taste: salty, sweet and sour. This will help you to find healthier options that also satisfy your taste buds.

  • If you’re craving salty: have a handful of salted almonds, a package of seaweed or a simple salad with olive oil and salt.
  • If you’re craving sweet: have a chocolate protein bar or 2 squares of the richest dark chocolate you can find (try to avoid milk chocolate).
  • If you’re craving sour: have pickled or fermented foods or some kind of vegetables (soup or salad) with lemon squeezed on top.
  • Other cravings include carbs and fats. If you’re craving these: have a sweet potato, quinoa, or brown-rice pasta with a little olive oil.

Ride It Out!

Our taste buds change every 2-3 weeks. If you remember this, you will be able to completely omit certain cravings by abstaining from them for a certain period of time until you no longer crave them. When you begin to crave, realize that it is a wave and it will pass. Many people seem to think the craving builds and explodes but that’s not true. It’s a fleeting moment that needs to be replaced with something else that makes you feel good. Options: exercise, take a bubble bath, listen to music, text that guy you have a crush on, get dressed up and make plans with your girlfriend, etc.

How Those ‘Who Know’ Begin Their Morning

Benefits-of-Lemon-Water-for-SkinAfter speaking with many of my girlfriends and colleagues in the entertainment and fashion industry, I realized that many of us have something in common: drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning.

Loaded with vitamins such as vitamin C, citric acid, flavanoids, B complex, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium–lemons are the ultimate superfood with amazing healing properties. I’m sure you know that they are good for detoxing and aiding in weight loss but the reasoning behind this is that lemons act as a laxative!

Detoxing begins with eliminating waste in the body through a bowel movement. Once you eliminate, you loose weight. It’s a domino effect.

Here’s how it works:

Lemons contain magnesium and cause your liver to produce bile. This is a cocktail for a bowel movement because magnesium relaxes your muscles while bile gets your digestive system moving! The key for this to work is to drink lukewarm lemon water first thing every morning and wait 20 minutes to have breakfast! Your body can’t digest and eliminate at the same time so give your body some time to have as complete an elimination as possible.

Other ways celebrities use lemon water:

  1. Freshen breath
  2. Relieve an acidic stomach

Freshen Breath

Having bad breath can be super uncomfortable when you’re on set. But one of the main reasons people have bad breath is due to having a dry mouth. Lemon water reduces bad breath in two ways. First, the acidity of lemon juice kills the bacteria in your mouth. Second, lemons stimulate saliva production which prevents bacteria from settling.

Relieves an Acidic Stomach

Drank too much at that after party? Lemons balance the pH levels in your body and reduce the acidity of your stomach. I know it’s probably the last thing you feel like consuming with an already acidic stomach, but try sipping on a little lemon water and prepare to be amazed.

There’s Something Growing In Your Body

It’s called “candida” and some of us have more of it and some of us have less. Candida is a type of yeast that naturally lives in your stomach and intestines and feeds off of sugar and dead tissue. However, if there is an overgrowth of it, this can lead to a host of problems such as:

  • bad breath
  • sugar cravings
  • gas
  • constipation
  • fatigue
  • insomnia
  • poor memory
  • low sex drive
  • acne
  • depression

The scary thing about candida is that you can look completely normal without ever knowing you have an overgrowth or infection! In addition, diagnosis can be tricky so doctors often prescribe medications to minimize the symptoms (laxatives for constipation, antibiotics for acne and anti-depressants for depression) without ever curing the infection, further exacerbating the situation.

If you think you may have candida overgrowth, your doctor can test for it by looking for certain candida antibodies in blood, stool or urine samples.

For healing candida, it is critical to begin with your diet. There is a special Anti-Candida diet which is composed of 3 stages: a cleanse, eliminating sugary and starchy foods, and reintroducing certain foods back into your diet. The only thing about living with candida overgrowth is that the bacteria can grow back if you eat sugar again, which is the main ingredient it thrives on. So this diet isn’t really a diet, it’s a lifestyle. But it’s the path you choose if you want to live a long and healthy life!

All you have to do is:

  1. avoid sugar (see food list below)
  2. take probiotics to put healthy bacteria back into your body
  3. incorporate anti-fungals which fight off the candida cells

What you didn’t know about Almonds

We all know almonds have incredible health benefits.  They increase memory and heart health; decrease blood pressure, cholesterol and weight; and contain calcium, vitamin E, magnesium, omega-3s and zinc. Having said that, they are the ultimate superfood! However… Did you know that the brown skin surrounding the almond contains an enzyme that prevents the human body from absorbing its nutrients? See, here’s the thing: almonds are just like other seeds and their skin is designed to protect them until there is enough moisture in the environment to allow them to germinate (a process whereby it begins to grow). This is the reason we soak almonds in water–to remove the skin so we can eat the part that is good for us! Not only do they taste better, but they are easier on your digestive system as well.

You only need raw almonds, water, and a bowl! Soak them for 4-8 hours, drain them, and place them in a sealed container in the refrigerator. If properly stored, they will last up to a week.
