The True Cure for Stretch Marks

Although retinoid creams may work to reduce stretch marks, once you have them you can’t get rid of them. You can only prevent new ones from forming. Like most illnesses, when you know the cause you can take preventative measures from getting almost anything. This has been true with STD’s, arthritis, heart disease, diabetes, certain cancers, etc. Stretch marks are no different.

STEP 1: Know the cause

Stretch marks do not discriminate! You can get them when you’re young, old, black, white, male, female, gay, or straight. They occur when our body is growing faster than our skin’s ability to expand. It’s the breaking of elastic fibers in our skin that results in stretch marks.

STEP 2: Take action

Strengthen your elastic fibers.

Have you ever considered why there are so many baby oils and lotions out on the market? It’s because infants are in a rapid state of growth in a short amount of time and their skin needs to be well moisturized so it has enough elasticity to be able to expand at the same rate that their body grows. Have you ever seen a baby with stretch marks? No, because mothers are constantly moisturizing their babies skin so that their elastic fibers stay well hydrated and don’t break.

As we get older, we forget that our bodies continue to grow. As a result, we get stretch marks because we aren’t moisturizing enough. Keeping skin well hydrated allows for more give and stretch without trauma to the skin. The same attention a mother places on hydrating her baby’s skin is the same amount of attention we need to place on our own skin no matter what age we are. Hydrating is especially important if we are preparing for a dramatic lifestyle change: body building, loosing weight, getting pregnant, etc. For this, we need to hydrate months in advanced so that our elastic fibers are prepared to expand and contract without breaking or becoming weak.

You might be genetically predisposed to stretch marks, but you can do something about it! Only you can change your body. In this case, all it takes is starting early and moisturizing everyday.

The Probiotic Face Mask

Pure, plain yogurt has been an old remedy for reducing acne, wrinkles and pigmentation. The reasoning behind this is that milk contains lactic acid, an ingredient found in almost every facial product on the market. Lactic acid is an alpha hydroxy acid that exfoliates your skin by breaking down the walls of older cells, thus revealing newer, softer and healthier skin underneath.

  1. Mix 2 tablespoons of yogurt. You can also add either (not both):
    1. Honey– good for moisturizing and soothing skin.
    2. Lemon– good for killing bacteria and brightening skin.
  2. Apply to your face for 2-5 minutes.
  3. Wash off with warm water and mild soap.
  4. Repeat once a week.

Warning: Do not leave the mask on for more than 5 minutes or your skin will get dry, itchy and break out.

Controlling Cravings 101

With a plethora of the most savory and sweetest dishes being made for the holidays, it may be difficult to control food cravings. Read below to find out (1) why we have cravings and (2) how to control them.

Studies on pregnant women have found that the more often women experienced food cravings, the more likely they were to gain weight. This makes sense, right? If a woman has a lot of cravings, she is bound to give into some of them and gain weight. Cravings occur when our hormones are imbalanced so this not only applies to pregnant women, but women who are on their period or under stress. Because stress and menstruation occur for a short period of time, the weight gained isn’t that noticeable. But pregnancy is a different story. When you’re pregnant with nine solid months of fluctuating hormones the weight gain can be dramatic.

No matter if you’re stressed, on your period or pregnant–you have the power to control your food cravings through these 3 steps.

  • Take your emotional temperature
  • Find healthy replacements
  • Ride it out

Take Your Emotional Temperature.

Are you feeling stressed? When we are stressed our body releases a hormone called cortisol which causes us to seek “rewards”, often times in the form of comfort foods such as candy and fast food. But by doing this, we are creating a powerful connection in our minds between feelings and food, leading to more frequent cravings that are impossible to control.

Find Healthy Replacements.

Pay attention to the kinds of foods you’re craving and categorize them by taste: salty, sweet and sour. This will help you to find healthier options that also satisfy your taste buds.

  • If you’re craving salty: have a handful of salted almonds, a package of seaweed or a simple salad with olive oil and salt.
  • If you’re craving sweet: have a chocolate protein bar or 2 squares of the richest dark chocolate you can find (try to avoid milk chocolate).
  • If you’re craving sour: have pickled or fermented foods or some kind of vegetables (soup or salad) with lemon squeezed on top.
  • Other cravings include carbs and fats. If you’re craving these: have a sweet potato, quinoa, or brown-rice pasta with a little olive oil.

Ride It Out!

Our taste buds change every 2-3 weeks. If you remember this, you will be able to completely omit certain cravings by abstaining from them for a certain period of time until you no longer crave them. When you begin to crave, realize that it is a wave and it will pass. Many people seem to think the craving builds and explodes but that’s not true. It’s a fleeting moment that needs to be replaced with something else that makes you feel good. Options: exercise, take a bubble bath, listen to music, text that guy you have a crush on, get dressed up and make plans with your girlfriend, etc.

How Those ‘Who Know’ Begin Their Morning

Benefits-of-Lemon-Water-for-SkinAfter speaking with many of my girlfriends and colleagues in the entertainment and fashion industry, I realized that many of us have something in common: drinking warm lemon water first thing in the morning.

Loaded with vitamins such as vitamin C, citric acid, flavanoids, B complex, calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium–lemons are the ultimate superfood with amazing healing properties. I’m sure you know that they are good for detoxing and aiding in weight loss but the reasoning behind this is that lemons act as a laxative!

Detoxing begins with eliminating waste in the body through a bowel movement. Once you eliminate, you loose weight. It’s a domino effect.

Here’s how it works:

Lemons contain magnesium and cause your liver to produce bile. This is a cocktail for a bowel movement because magnesium relaxes your muscles while bile gets your digestive system moving! The key for this to work is to drink lukewarm lemon water first thing every morning and wait 20 minutes to have breakfast! Your body can’t digest and eliminate at the same time so give your body some time to have as complete an elimination as possible.

Other ways celebrities use lemon water:

  1. Freshen breath
  2. Relieve an acidic stomach

Freshen Breath

Having bad breath can be super uncomfortable when you’re on set. But one of the main reasons people have bad breath is due to having a dry mouth. Lemon water reduces bad breath in two ways. First, the acidity of lemon juice kills the bacteria in your mouth. Second, lemons stimulate saliva production which prevents bacteria from settling.

Relieves an Acidic Stomach

Drank too much at that after party? Lemons balance the pH levels in your body and reduce the acidity of your stomach. I know it’s probably the last thing you feel like consuming with an already acidic stomach, but try sipping on a little lemon water and prepare to be amazed.

How Beauty Products Are Deceiving You

While drugstore lipliners and mascaras may be okay, when putting something on your biggest organ, just anything will no longer do. Especially while pregnant you must be extra careful what you use on your largest organ, your skin! What you put on your skin is always absorbed by your bloodstream (pregnant or not) and can be passed to your baby though the placenta.

The problem with most skin care products is that their labels are deceiving and down right manipulative. Take, for example, Palmers Cocoa Butter Formula Moisturizing Gel Oil. I hear so many women talk about Palmers for stretch marks. You would think that this product contains cocoa butter since it’s in the name, right? Wrong! There are only three active ingredients, none of which are cocoa butter!

  1. Avobenzone–can be found in urine and breastmilk, therefore making it unsafe for pregnant women or children to use.
  2. Octinoxate–is absorbed rapidly into the body, known to cause cancer, increases estrogen and damages the thyroid.
  3. Oxybenzone–is known to cause cancer, reduce sperm count in men and potentially contribute to endomitriosis in women.

Keep in mind that this is just one cream out of many others that are equally misleading and contain harmful chemicals. That being said, it is extremely important that we look at the ingredients in our creams. Especially if you have important skin issues like eczema or stretch marks! Creams containing artificial chemicals might temporarily promise hydration but will further exacerbate the issue. And if you have stretch marks you will want to apply the healthiest product possible to nourish and heal those vulnerable areas.

Natural products such as olive oil and coconut oil are gaining more and more attention because they are pure, safe and healthy to use on the body! It also doesn’t hurt that they can most likely be found in your kitchen cabinet! Healthy, affordable and multi-useable, coconut oil and olive oil definitely win in my eyes!

Sometimes it isn’t the fancier option that’s better.

Trending: Oil Pulling

Oil pulling has been around forever! It’s an Ayurvedic technique that began in India and only until recently gained popularity in the US after studies were done proving its health benefits! Coconut oil is literally a magnet for germs! It has anti-bacterial properties and works by binding to any plaque or bacteria. So when you swish a teaspoon of it in your mouth for a few minutes, it pulls out all the germs, leaving your mouth extremely clean! But that’s not all. Because the mouth is the window to the body and the gums are a direct pathway to the bloodstream, when you purify your mouth, you are essentially pulling out all the toxins from your entire body–thus the name “oil pulling”.

The health benefits include:

  • Alternative to flossing
  • Better oral hygiene
  • Whiter teeth
  • Prevents bad breath
  • Decreases gum disease
  • Cures tooth decay
  • Alleviates dry mouth
  • Reduces inflammation
  • Boosts energy
  • Clears skin
  • Decreases chances of getting sick
  • Decreases headaches
  • Relieves sinus congestion
  • Reduces insomnia

STEP 1:     Simply swish a teaspoon of coconut oil in your mouth for 5 minutes first thing in the morning before brushing your teeth. I like to keep my coconut oil in the shower so that I can do it while I wash my hair!

STEP 2:     Then spit. Never swallow.

STEP 3:     Repeat every morning.

Why Are So Many Celebrities Having a Home Birth?

abe5a1da299073661cf08f741e6bb8be 0dfda5e320946d2278e6dd9cb7d1d260806bd72def9f9908a08912262b25e2cf7d3933f6116b7263ec2c3be9454060468fitp2093384295_01298484194_preg-oscars-streep-lg30E19BA100000578-3432088-image-m-82_1454604633327e1b49cc0bcf76e394c340a81eb59687b

The following celebrities have had a home birth:

Cindy Crawford,   Demi Moore,   Gisele Bundchen,   Hope Dworaczyk,   Miranda Kerr,   Jessica Alba,   Pamela Anderson,   Meryl Streep,   Joely Fischer,   Julianne Moore,   Jennifer Connelly,   Mayim Bialik,   Alyson Hannigan,   Alanis Morissette,   Kelly Preston,   Ricki Lake,   Lisa Bonet

Having a natural home birth is becoming a popular birthing method among women who have done their research and want the healthiest and happiest of babies! As highly successful actresses and models, these women know what they are doing when it comes to taking care of their bodies. Benefits include:

  • Greater freedom
  • Greater control
  • Faster labor
  • Faster recovery
  • Fewer Interventions
  • Empowerment

Greater Freedom

In a hospital you are forced to lie down for the doctors convenience, but with a natural birth you are free to walk around, squat, change positions, etc. It’s about what makes you feel most comfortable! In addition, being in an upright position works in your favor because gravity is helping you bring the baby down!

Greater Control

One of the biggest reasons to have a natural birth is because you can be in control and participate in your own labor. In a hospital birth, you can’t do this because you are under heavy pain medications and the doctor makes the final decisions.

Faster Labor

In a natural birth, you feel the pain but you also feel where and when it is time to push. In a hospital birth, when you numb the pain you numb your awareness, causing the pushing to be harder and the labor to be longer.

Faster Recovery

In a natural birth, you are able to walk around shortly after giving birth. But in a hospital birth, it can take a fews days to recover if you took pain medications and a few weeks to recover if you had a c-section.

Fewer Interventions

In a hospital birth, the medications you ingest are also ingested by your baby. Depending on how much medication you are given, your baby could need to be hospitalized to get the drugs out of his or her system. In addition, studies have shown that babies who are not exposed to pain medication during labor are more alert and breastfeed better.

There is nothing more profound than being able to witness your own birth and be 100% in the moment when you see your child for the first time. Experiencing real labor and knowing what your mind and your body are capable of doing is an incredible and irreplaceable thing.

Mantra Monday

Having a case of the Mondays? Whether you’re starting a new job, trying to lose weight, moving to a new city or expecting a baby—each week comes with new responsibilities, goals and challenges. But one way to handle life’s twists and turns is through practicing mantras. A mantra is a prayer or phrase that you repeat to yourself silently or out loud to help you focus on your intentions.

The benefits of practicing mantras:

  • Calms the mind
  • Relieves anxiety and depression
  • Increases self-awareness
  • Increases positive thinking
  • Increases focus
  • Empowers

No matter where you come from, how much money you make, where you went to college—we are all in the same boat called life. We are all dealing with different problems mentally, physically, emotionally, and socially. When people tell us that we aren’t good enough, smart enough, strong enough, or skinny enough—mantras settle the noise and allow us to find peace and power within. After all, we can do and be anything if we put our minds to it.

Krazy for Kombucha

Kombucha is one of my favorite go-to drinks whenever I’m feeling sluggish, sick or sore. It is a fermented and carbonated drink that consists of yeast, water, sugar, tea and vinegar. You can buy it at most grocery stores or make it at home, but I prefer to buy it in store because making it at home can be a bit of a hit-or-miss process. Read on below to see why you should incorporate it into your diet!

The reason why I drink Kombucha is because it detoxifies the body! It contains gluconic acid and probiotics which work to remove any toxins and cleanse the liver and kidneys.

Since this is a fermented drink, it works like a probiotic by promoting gut health and relieving stomach ulcers and constipation. It also contains beneficial enzymes from the vinegar, which can help to balance your stomach PH by neutralizing any acid.

After the fermentation process, Kombucha contains a small trace of iron, caffeine and sugar, which can help to energize the body by increasing oxygen circulation to cells and other tissues.

Immune System

An antioxidant known as D-saccharic acid-1, 4-lactone was discovered in Kombucha after the fermentation process. This antioxidant supports the immune system by protecting and strengthening cell walls.

Kombucha contains glucosamines which have been known to preserve collagen, relieve joint discomfort, and smooth wrinkles.

Note: There are many different brands and flavors of Kombucha, but one thing to be cautious of is the sugar content. The ones that I have found to be lower in sugar are GT ‘Ginger’ and Health-Aid ‘Pomogranate’.
