Shopping for BABY (part 1)

If you read the previous post which many of you did, you already know I’m having a baby! I’m currently in the beginning of my 8th month of pregnancy and am still staying super active doing Pilates daily and now in baby countdown mode! I’ll do a pregnancy post on fitness and why I chose to deliver at home with a midwife in a later post… but for now let’s shop!

I’ve been researching safety and reviews of baby products from cribs, to strollers to diaper pails almost since I’ve become pregnant. Friends and family find it surprising that up until I reached 7 months I hadn’t bought a single thing for the baby.  We aren’t finding out the sex so most things I am buying are white, cream, grey or silver. I should explain we split time and live in three places when we are in the U.S. so we’ve bought multiple strollers and items. We have an apartment in New York which is more modern and even though it’s a large place it just doesn’t have as much space as our homes in Austin or ranch in Colorado. So each place needs a different high chair, stroller, warmer blankets in Colorado, more modern space saving items in NY etc. I’ve broken down some of my favorite baby items below.

The nursery in Colorado will be more rustic and simple. We are there in the summer and a few times in the Winter (and will likely be there this Winter more since Europe is a long flight for a newborn baby.) Together we chose the Colette Tufted Crib in Pewter Grey, Haylan Dresser in Antique Grey with the dresser topper that makes it a changing table also, Pewter Angel Wings , and the Belgian Slope Arm Swivel Glider with Slipcover in white. The room will be all white and grey with touches of color once we have the baby and know what the sex is. I plan to have custom bedding made by Hug Bug Bedding after the baby is born. rhbc_prod373116_B12_clrhbc262090 rhbc_prod373144_B12 rhbc_prod379425 rhbc_prod405163 s14_008_colette_panel

For New York and for Austin we wanted to go with something clean and modern and bought two Nursery Works Vetro Lucite Cribs. They are GORGEOUS! It’s 100 percent recyclable and non-toxic. They’re made by hand and part of a numbered limited edition. The clear sides give an unimpeded view of baby and nursery. At first I thought this crib was too cold and I felt it gave a fishbowl effect. Once I started looking at bedding and other items to fill nursery I fell in love with the simplicity of it. It’s currently backordered until late October so I’m hoping it will be here in time for baby and the date doesn’t get moved back again. Nursery Works also makes the Vetro Rocker if you want a lucite rocker. I feel it’s a little too modern and wanted a cozier glider but am still considering it for New York. For Austin we chose the Empire Rocker Glider by Angel Song in Aspen Silver with the Park Avenue Half Moon Tufted Ottoman. It’s huge and comfortable. Everything is super clean and basically the color pallet now is all neutral… white, grey and silver for all the nurseries. This will change when the baby is born and we find out the sex.

Travel Cribs

We spend a lot of time traveling so I’ve tried to find items to specifically use when traveling and to keep on the plane to make life easier. My girlfriend Emma Bing has been a source of useful information. Emma’s mom is superwoman Heidi Murkoff the writer of “What to Expect When Your Expecting!” Emma swears by the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib. The great advantage is the Baby Bjorn Travel Crib is only 11 lbs.

I’m also looking at the 21lb. Nuna Sena Travel Cot because it has the infant bassinet that can be removed with baby is not longer an infant. I also like that it folds up smaller than the Baby Bjorn. Downfall is it’s heavier.LG_SEN56F~GRAPHLG_SEN56F~GRAPH_1

The last travel crib I love is the 4 Moms Breeze. Just one button will open or close it and it comes with a carry case like the others. The downfall is a weighs a heavy 30 lbs. The upside is it can be set up and taken down with just one hand. If you aren’t traveling much or far I think it’s a great option. Personally I’m leaning toward the first two. breeze_package-44587928e9a7d6dfae2afa8877ccb5a7

I have four favorite strollers right now. I need at least 3. One for travel and one to stay in Austin and one for New York for use in Central Park and around the city. The first is the Stokke Xplory (with the bag underneath) and the Stokke Crusi (with the large basket and option to attach a second chair for more than one baby) both of which come with the winter kit to keep baby and your hands warm while pushing. I purchased the Stokke Xplory in Black Melange and the red winter kit. Both strollers have the option to have the baby face the world or face you. One stroller that a lot of people love is the Bugaboo. I feel it is too low to the ground. I’m 5’10” without heels so I think the Bugaboo puts the baby too low to ground. The Stokke Xplory handlebar height is 27″ – 45.5″.

I’m also in love with the design of the Mima Xari Stroller which I bought for Central Park in Snow White. It’s also available in black and caramel. The bassinet and carrier are one piece and convert by unzipping a hidden zipper. It also has the ability to face either you or the world. Mima Xari has a winter kit to keep your hands and the baby warm also and it’s available in any of the colors the stroller comes in. Visually this is my favorite and will order it in “Snow White” for New York. The handlebar height ranges from 33″ – 43″.

The 4 Moms Origami Stroller folds up in the push of a button on it’s own, has running lights and is self charging. Oh and it charges your cell phone! I tend to like black, white, grey and neutral colors for baby but it comes in brighter colors if you are into that. It’s a lot sportier than the others.  The handlebar is NOT adjustable. Shorter parents are out of luck because it is a very high handle bar located 41″ from the ground.

Last is the Orbit G3 Travel System. It’s selling point is it has a 360 degree swivel seat and you can snap the baby car seat into it and go when traveling. It’s available in many colors and has a paparazzi shield to protect baby from weather elements or people. I’m tall and feel like this chair is a little lower than I wanted originally but think it’s an option for travel and to keep on the plane. The handlebar height ranges from 40″-46.5″.

I also HIGHLY recommend the Mommy Hook Stroller Hanger for any of the strollers above. If you like to shop and typically bring home multiple bags two hooks are better than one.  mommyhook

High Chairs

I need some guidance with high chairs. I haven’t found one I’m in love with. I really wanted one on with wheels I could lock and unlock to move around but haven’t found one I love. European company Mima has the Moon high chair that takes you from infant to toddler and is height adjustable.

I also love how clean looking the Bloom Fresco in in Chrome. I feel like it fits well in our Austin kitchen. It also has a smaller footprint than most high chairs and has a 360 degree turn so baby can spin and then be bar height or table height. I did go see this one in person to make sure it was stable. I purchased this for Austin.

Baby Carriers

I love the Baby K’tan. It’s simple, versatile, lightweight, easy and ideal for newborns. kt-001_5z

I also love the Beco Baby Gemini and is more structured and ideal for older babies. Jake-Beco-Carrier-Gemini-H

I think my favorite carrier right now is the Ergo 360 Baby Carrier.

Car Seat

I’m in love with the design and safety of both of the carseats below. Now I just need to make a decision on which to buy.

The Cybex Aton Q has a hidden canopy and is my ultimate carseat right now. I purchased this to use most of the time. I love neutral colors so I lean towards the grey or black. I bought the black. If you’re researching safety this is one of the safest car seats available.

9202_8790_cybex_aton_q_charcoal_black_2 cybex aton_q con base isofixNuna Pipa is a favorite because of the safety and it’s super light weight at just under 8 lbs. I also love the built in canopy that protects baby from both preying eyes and weather elements. It’s available in many colors but I lean toward the black again, because in my opinion its the most clean and chic option.

I did love the design of the Maxi Cosi car seat. It comes with a European-style sun canopy and a built-in leg cover to keep baby cozy.  Both stow away when not in use. I’ve read a lot of reviews and it doesn’t get great reviews. A lot of people say it brings the baby’s head forward.

There is another carseat made by Doona that is currently only available in the UK. I’m trying to have one picked up and brought back to the states for me since technically I shouldn’t fly on long trips anymore. It’s won quite a few innovation awards. I contacted Doona and they told me it should be available in the U.S. by the end of the year. It is perfect in you don’t have to carry the seat or carry a stroller. The seat is the stroller all in one. I can see myself using this in quick in and out trips like walking into Starbucks or places you don’t want to carry the baby carrier.

I love the new Ninna Pippa by Monte Designs. The older model is available now with a white base but this new model becomes available late December or early January. This debuted at the Kids Expo 14 in Vegas this month.

The Bloom Alma Mini Crib is a roll away bed that also folds up to fit in any closet. I like that I can roll this from the bedroom into the main part of the house if necessary. Baby can sleep in the Alma Mini for up to one year. It’s also available in a full size version.

The Halo Swivel Sleeper is great if baby is sleeping next to your bed. It adjusts to bed level and swings over top of bed if you want it to. It’s not as nice to look at it but I’ve been told its all about whats functional. Since babies are in bassinets for such a short time I’m considering this option also. I’d love a pretty bassinet with all the frills but I think these are the safest options.

There are so many baby items I want to buy and have read about. These are the largest items. I plan to do another list of the smaller items I love. There are so many baby items out there and I want to make sure I’m buying the smartest items. This is still a working list so feel free to share your favorites. If you have any of the above items or if you have any recommendations I’d love to hear about them!
